POLITICS WENT to the dogs this week – and everyone loved it – as Border Collie Jim strutted his stuff to be crowned Holyrood Dog of the Year 2025.

Jim, proud sidekick to Argyll and Bute MSP Jenni Minto, charmed the judges with his winning personality, wagging tail and unbreakable bond with his MSP. Facing stiff competition from 12 other political pooches, Jim showed true dogged determination to take home the coveted title outside the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh.

Now in its seventh year, the Holyrood Dog of the Year competition – organised by The Kennel Club and Dogs Trust – brought together MSPsofallstripes(and their four-legged friends) to celebrate the joys of dog ownership, and to highlight key issues affecting canine welfare.

A delighted Jenni Minto said after her victory: “I’m over the moon! Jim means the world to me. He’s such a loving, happy dog and it’s so comforting to know he’s always there after a busy day. He deserves this recognition – and I’m just so proud of him.”

This year’s event was all about recognising dogs as real members of the family – whether part of a busy household or a one-person, one-dog dream team. Dogs Trust and The Kennel Club reminded everyone that the unconditional love of a dog is something truly special.

The judging panel – Helen Kerfoot from The Kennel Club, Dogs Trust Trustee Sue Murphy, and last year’s winner Marie McNair MSP – had their work cut out choosing a winner, but Jim’s spirit and the bond he shares with Jenni ultimately won the day.

Helen Kerfoot said: “Huge congratulations to Jim and Jenni. It’s clear to see the wonderful partnership they have.HolyroodDogofthe Year is a brilliant way to celebrate the incredible role dogs play in our lives – as companions, confidants and best friends.”

Meanwhile, the public had their say too. In a hotly contested online ‘pawblic’ vote, it was Roma, the lovable Labrador Retriever, owned by Craig Hoy MSP, who won over the nation’s hearts.

Craig Hoy said: “Roma’s a local legend at the pub – everyone knows and loves her. I’m so chuffed she’s won the public vote. Dogs really are the best bridge between people, and today’s event provedthat.”

Also making the podium were Kura San, a sleek Flat Coated Retriever (second place, with Tess White MSP), and Buster the rescue dog (third place, with Jamie Halcro Johnston MSP).

One thing’s for sure – Holyrood’s hounds have never looked so fetching.
