Two young Brandane footballers played a starring role in an unforgettable Easter weekend, helping their Largs Colts teammates secure a brilliant third-place finish at the prestigious Holland Cup in Almere, Netherlands.
William McKechnie and Cameron Fisher, both from Rothesay, were part of the Largs Colts 2011 squad that represented Scotland with pride in a tournament that saw over 300 youth teams from across Europe compete across five impressive sports parks.
The Colts opened their campaign in style, winning two of their three group stage matches to earn a spot in the top-six group finals.
William made an early impact, assisting the winning goal against SC Buiten Boys – a tight 1–0 victory that set the tone for the weekend.
After a narrow defeat to England’s Seagulls FC on Day Two, the Colts rallied to beat VV As 80 and set up a dramatic third-place play-off against Dutch side ASC Waterwijk.
In a nail-biting finale, the Colts came out 2–1 winners thanks to a last-gasp goal that will live long in the memory.
The squad’s grit and unity shone through across the weekend, with the boys from Bute contributing to a historic achievement for the club.
Proudly donning the Colts’ colours, William and Cameron not only flew the flag for Largs but for the Isle of Bute.
The entire squad – including Ethan Lang, Scott McGowan, Antony Crosbie, Kaiden Wilkie, Jack Marshall, Aaron Denholm, Josh Cameron, Campbell Rawley, Rory Totter, Jamie Gordon, Aidan McDonald, Matthew Masterman, Ollie Shopp, Zach Detzner, and Spencer Li – can be immensely proud of their performances on foreign soil.
With a League Cup semi-final and potential league title still to chase, the Largs Colts 2011’s aren’t done writing their story – and for William and Cameron, this may just be the beginning of something very special.
