Fire recovery group update

Just a month after the fire on Argyll Street, one of the destroyed businesses has already restarted trading, and another hopes to be back up and running by Christmas, the Dunoon Fire Community Recovery Group has said.

The Dunoon Fire Community Recovery Group (DFCRG) has issued its first statement since being formed in the aftermath of the fire.

The group’s main task is to support the businesses and to allocate the money raised by crowdfunding.

The crowdfunding page raised £31,740, which is subject to a 2.9 per cent processing cost. A further £1,634 was donated and receipted at the Queen’s Hall.

The statement says: “The committee has set up a fair and transparent process for the allocation of funds and has so far distributed £7,310, where the insurance has not covered immediate financial hardship, but more importantly the claim comes with a viable plan for the business to recover and trade again. Further recovery plan applications are in progress.”

The statement also provided details on the progress of the business’ recoveries.

Dunoon locals may have noticed that Pricewise were able to resume business quickly from alternative premises, namely their second shop Pricewise Toytastic.

Cameron’s Dairy has also secured new premises and hopes to be trading again by Christmas.

We understand these new premises will be on Moir Street.

The Trading Post shop is a charitable set-up, which was operating from a rented shop.

At the time of the fire they had some 40 traders selling from the shop, mainly in the arts and crafts sector, and they are currently working with insurers to recover stock losses. Future plans and intentions of this business are currently unknown, and the charity has to reach a decision if it is viable.

Plans regarding Colemans Crafts are currently unknown, however, the statement notes they already had plans to cease trading in October.

Other victims of the fire have been asked to come forward.
